Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring the members of our dynamic team who, in their own way, help injured clients and their families plan for a secure financial future. Today the spotlight is on Rachel McCarthy, Marketing Director at Milestone. We asked Rachel a few questions about working at Milestone and life outside the office. Read on to learn more about her!

How do you help Milestone’s clients?

As a marketing director, I don’t often work directly with Milestone’s clients. But I would say I help them indirectly by building relationships with their attorneys and educating lawyers on the benefits of settlement planning. I would love to have settlement planning become an intrinsic step in litigation, but unfortunately, many attorneys don’t really understand what it is or know about the range of financial solutions and tools we have in our toolkit. My job at Milestone is to tell the story of what we do, why we’re driven to do it, and how our financial planning helps set up plaintiffs for lifelong success.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is being able to be an advocate for justice in my everyday life. When you’re younger you tend to think, “When I’m grown up, I want to help people.” Though it’s in an unconventional way, at Milestone we actually do get to have a positive effect on people’s lives every day. I’ve always been drawn to issues of justice and the desire to help my fellow man and woman. Working at a settlement planning company exposes me to a network of fierce, kind, and passionate trial lawyers who feel the same way, as well as a community of individuals who have experienced a tragedy or injustice firsthand.

What is your favorite thing about working in Buffalo?

Working in Buffalo enables one to have a great quality of life. The cost of living in the city is reasonable, and Buffalo is a booming place with tons to do, amazing restaurants, a strong cultural scene, and four distinct seasons. But Buffalo is also gritty and has seen its fair share of turmoil, so Buffalonians have an appreciation for the good and do not take it for granted. I think Buffalo sort of represents the American city, and therefore we are able to empathize with people from all over the country.

How would you describe Milestone’s corporate culture in one word?

“Good people.” OK, not one word, but one phrase!

What makes you a good party guest?

I am a good talker! You can put me in a room with a bunch of strangers and I will strike up a conversation.

What is your “walking down the street” song?

Lovely Day – Bill Withers

If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be?

Chocolate with rainbow sprinkles. Classic, consistent, reliable, with a dash of fun and adventure.

What is your personal mission statement?

Always do what you can to try and be a good person, and don’t be afraid to follow your own drum beat.
